Bulk ABN and GST check tools compared
There's more than one way to check a list of supplier ABNs and GST registrations in one go, and they suit different jobs. This page sets out what each tool says it does, from its own website as checked on 19 October 2026. We make ClearABN, one of the six, so read it with that in mind. Features and prices change, so follow the links and check each tool's own page before you decide. We haven't quoted other tools' prices; follow each tool's link for its current pricing.
The tools side by side
Every tool here reads the same public register, so the ABN and GST facts they show come from the same place. The differences are in what you have to give them, what else they check, and what you get back.
| Tool | What you give it | What it checks | What you get back | Free option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ABR ABN Lookup and Name Lookup tools | A column of ABNs or ACNs (or names, in the Name Lookup tool) in an Excel workbook. Needs Excel 2010 or later with macros enabled. | Current ABN status, entity and business names, current GST registration and its date of effect. The Name Lookup tool lists matching names and their ABNs. | The filled-in workbook. Run it again and changed records are highlighted. | Free, from the Australian Business Register. |
| GST-Verify | A CSV or Excel file of ABNs, up to 500 per report. The ABN column is detected for you; no registration needed. | ABN status, legal entity name, current GST status and the GST effective-from date. Duplicate ABNs are detected and removed. | A PDF evidence report with a report ID, plus CSV (for importing into accounting software) and JSON. | Up to 5 ABNs free, then pay per report with no subscription. |
| Veritas Lookup | A connection to your Xero or QuickBooks file (you sign in to it from Veritas). Contacts are synced for you. | Each contact's ABN (valid, cancelled, not found or not provided), GST registration and entity name, re-checked over time. Duplicate contacts are listed. | A list of contacts that need action, and alerts when an ABN is cancelled, GST lapses or a name changes. | No free trial, per its FAQ. Monthly or yearly subscription. |
| Gumshoe | A supplier search by ABN or name, or a CSV with an ABN or name column. Bulk searching needs a free account. | ABN, GST and entity status plus 20+ government registers: ASIC, licences, sanctions, insolvency, NDIS and enforcement orders, and fraud signals such as new domains. Bank-change checks too. | Timestamped checks you can export, and paid monthly monitoring of the supplier list. | Free supplier search and a free account; monitoring and some checks are paid. |
| abncheck.com | ABNs pasted into a box, one per line or comma-separated. | ABN status and current GST registration. | Results on the page. Its page says to get in touch for business-name lookup or a CSV export. | Free. |
| ClearABN (ours) | A Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks contacts or bills export as it comes out of the software, a spreadsheet, or pasted ABNs. Nothing to connect or install. | Check digit, ABN status, current GST registration, GST registration on each bill's own invoice date, whether the name you hold matches the register, rows that share an ABN, and possible register matches by name for rows with no ABN. | Results with a drafted note to each flagged supplier, a CSV, a PDF, and a Xero or MYOB import file. | The first 25 rows of every check, with no account. Longer lists are a paid one-off audit or a monitoring plan. |
Which one fits
A short list, and you only need today's status: the ABR's Excel tool if you can run macros, GST-Verify if you'd rather upload a file and get an evidence report, or abncheck.com to paste a few ABNs.
You want your Xero or QuickBooks contacts kept checked without exporting anything: Veritas Lookup connects to the file and alerts you when something changes.
Your worry is fraud or risk beyond the ABN, such as licences, banned directors, sanctions or a supplier changing bank details: Gumshoe checks far more registers than any of the others.
You're doing BAS and want to know whether each supplier was registered for GST on the date of each bill, starting from a Xero or MYOB export and ending with an import file: that's the job ClearABN is built for. It also suits anyone who'd rather not connect another app to a client's accounting file.
Three questions to ask any tool
Does it check GST registration on the invoice date, or only today? A supplier who is registered now may not have been when they billed you, and a tax invoice from a supplier who wasn't registered for GST at the time doesn't support a GST credit. Tools that show the GST effective-from date let you work it out by hand; ClearABN checks each bill's date for you when the file has one.
Does it take your file as it is? Re-typing or reshaping a 400-row export is where most of the time goes. Check whether the tool reads your software's export, a connection, or only a pasted column of ABNs.
What happens to your list afterwards? Each tool's privacy page says what it keeps and for how long. ClearABN's is at clearabn.com.au/privacy.
Register facts, not advice
All six tools report what the Australian Business Register shows. None of them, including ClearABN, is the ABR or the ATO, and none gives tax advice. ClearABN isn't affiliated with any of the other tools listed. If you spot something here that's out of date, email hello@clearabn.com.au and we'll fix it.
